Mint Mobile data breach allowed hackers to port phone numbers

Mint Mobile disclosed a data breach in which an unauthorized attacker gained access to subscribers’ account information and ported phone numbers.

Mint Mobile, an American telecommunications company sells mobile phone services and operates as an MVNO on T-Mobile’s cellular network in the United States.

In the data breach the subscribers’ account information was exposed and their phone numbers were ported to another carrier.

According to the data breach notification that was sent to the impacted subscribers, an unauthorized person gained access to their data between June 8th and June 10th.

However, the company did not reveal how hackers had accessed the subscribers’ data.

The attacker also managed to port the phone numbers for a “small” number of Mint Mobile subscribers to another carrier without the authorization of the subscribers.

The attacker also potentially accessed subscribers’ personal information which includes the name, address, telephone number, email address, password, bill amount, international call detail information, telephone number, account number, and subscription features.

The telecommunication company stated that they immediately took steps to reverse the process and restore the service.

All the subscribers are recommended to change their account password, and protect other accounts that use the same phone number.
